Starting with the information people needed
The idea was to make election and candidate research easier to approach. We brought together election information, news, and legislative data using the Google Civic, Microsoft Bing News, and ProPublica APIs available at the time. That gave the interface several sources to draw on, with a common purpose: helping someone explore an election.
02
Connecting the sources and the team
I led the four-developer team through the hackathon build. We used React for the interface and integrated the external services into a progressive web app. The work brought interface design, API integration, and team coordination together around a prototype we could present within the event.
03
A working prototype and a shared result
ELECT placed third in the junior/senior tier at Crimson Code 2020. It is an early example of the kind of work I still enjoy: connecting separate sources and technologies around a useful workflow, with a team bringing the pieces together.
The public repository preserves the 2020 hackathon prototype described here.
